Govt of India, Department of School Education & Literacy, New Delhi with
enclosures.
&&& All the Regional Joint
Directors of School Education (RJDSEs) and District Educational Officers (DEOs)
in the State are hereby informed that as you are aware that Millets are group
of small grains abode of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and
antioxidants that can help to eradicate the plethora of nutritional deficiency
diseases. Millets are bestowed with a wealth of nutrients and fibre and that
supports boost metabolism, augment heart health, control blood pressure and
diabetes and promote weight loss.
Further informed that the UN General
assembly has recently adopted a resolution and declared 2023 as by as the
"International Year of Millets". The resolution is intended to
increase public awareness on health benefits of millets and their
sustainability for cultivation under tough conditions marked by climate change.
The Main objectives of international year of millets celebrations are:
a. Elevate awareness of the contribution
of millets to food security and nutrition
b. Inspire stakeholders on improving
sustainable production and quality of millets
c. Draw focus on enhanced investment in
research and development and extension services to achieve the other two aims.
Also informed that the Department of
Agriculture & Farmer welfare vide in their letter D.O. Letter no4-4/2022
NFSM dated 5th September, 2022 mentioned that in consonance with the Government
of India's initiative for the IYOM, Schools across the country can take an
active role in generating in awareness and mobilizing students, teachers, other
school officials. Therefore, they have suggested that schools across the
country may conduct 3-4 of the suggested activities listed at Annexure-1.
Hence, the following activities along
with the activities suggested activities listed at Annexure-1 have to be taken
up in all the Districts in the State for celebration of "International
Year of Millets - 2023 under PM POSHAN (MDM):
i. An E-Quiz competition (1st to 30th
October, 2022) shall be organized on MyGov portal exclusively on millets( link
of E-Quiz shall be shared separately)
ii. Districts may prepare small videos /
banner on importance of millets and disseminate up to school level.
iii. Special meetings of school
managements committee may be held to discuss the importance of millets in diet
with parents of the children
iv. Every student may prepare a meal
made of millet at home and take a selfie and share with a teacher and post it
on social media
v. A student in each class may be
designated a "Millet Mantri" so that they can discuss about millets
in class. vi. Training and capacity building programmes may be carried out in
for awareness of the school children and all other stakeholders regarding the
goodness of millets.
Therefore, all the Regional Joint
Directors of School Education (RJDSEs) and District Educational Officers (DEOs)
in the State are hereby requested to issue necessary instructions to all Mandal
Educational officers (MEOs)/ Head Masters (HMS) under their control and ensure
maximum participation of Students under various activities mentioned above and
initiate necessary preparatory activities at each level. Also requested to use
the data available on the official website of the Indian Institute of Millet Research
(IIMR) i.e., https://www.millets.res.in/
and utilize official WhatsApp groups to give this a wide publicity. Action
taken report shall be submitted in the prescribed format as per the Annexure-2
enclose herewith on monthly basis without fail.
